Hiu Kok was the last pseudonym used by the famous Chinese writer Lu Xun. The name refers to the bugle used to summon comrades in the army. Founded in 1975 by Lawrence Lei and Yu Meng Sang, the Hiu Kok Drama Association (HKDA) is an independent and non-profit drama association. Over the past 31 years the HKDA has presented more than 200 performances, most of them of original scripts.
To promote drama activities in Macao, the Hiu Kok Drama Association has continuously been inviting drama troupes from abroad to participate in exchange performances in Macao. Among these troupes are Chung Ying Theatre Company, No-Man Zone, March Theatre, Line 4 Drama Company, 20-Bean, Box Picture, Red Calf Drama Company, Frog Island, Who Drama Society, Mute World and Zhuo Troupe from Hong Kong; the Shanghai Theatre Academy and the Qiantang Theatrical Research Institute of Hangzhou from Mainland China; the Local School from Singapore, the Deaf Drama Company from Australia and Brain Fever Dance from Costa Rica. The Association has also taken part in Hong Kong Joint Drama Performances since 1986 and regularly participates in Macao Joint Drama Performances, all to great acclaim.
The HKDA receives many invitations from abroad, as well, and has travelled to perform in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Taiwan, Singapore and Portugal.
In addition to performing, the Hiu Kok Drama Association devotes time and energy to popularising theatrical arts in multiple other ways, offering training courses for directors and actors/actresses, workshops on the general co-ordination of theatre activities and forums. The Association also sends its actors and actresses to Portugal to take drama courses under the instruction of professional troupes and finances its members’ drama studies in Macao and overseas. Between 1983 and 1985, it participated in the production of the “Hiu Kok Dramas” broadcast on Macao Radio Station, a collection of 1200 episodes aired over three years. It also issued a monthly Dramatic Arts Gallery on drama during this term and published the collection of plays Pink Face and Instant – Selected Long Drama Works of Lawrence Lei. Lawrence Lei became Permanent Honorary Arts Director of the Association in February 2009.
The Hiu Kok Laboratory is a small-plan theatre set up by the Hiu Kok Drama Association. It began operating in November of 1999, becoming the first small theatre to be run by a non-governmental institution in Macao. With an area of over 2000 square feet, it can accommodate an audience of 80, providing Macao arts organisations with unique rehearsal and performance premises. The plays staged in the small theatre, aside from works created by the Hiu Kok Drama Association and many other Macao troupes, include productions of works by drama companies from Hong Kong, Costa Rica, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Brazil. As of 2009, nearly 70 works had been staged in the Laboratory. Beginning in 2007, to take advantage of its space and flexibility, the Laboratory introduced the “Series for New Directors” to train up and coming directors.
Associacao de Representacao Teatral Hiu Kok
Hiu Kok e o ultimo pseudonimo do famoso escritor chines Lu Xun. Este nome refere-se ao cornetim usado para convocar os camaradas na tropa. Fundada em 1975 por Lawrence Lei e Yu Meng Sang, a Associacao de Representacao Teatral Hiu Kok (ARTHK) e uma associacao de teatro independente nao-lucrativa. Nos ultimos 31 anos, a ARTHK apresentou mais de 200 espectaculos, sendo a maior parte guioes originais.
A fim de promover as actividades teatrais em Macau, a Associacao de Representacao Teatral Hiu Kok tem convidado continuamente grupos estrangeiros a participar em representacoes de intercambio teatral em Macau. Entre estes grupos contam-se a Companhia de Teatro Chung Ying, No-Man Zone, March Theatre, Companhia de Teatro Line 4, 20-Bean, Box Picture, Companhia de Teatro Red Calf, Frog Island, Who Drama Society, Mute World e Zhuo Troupe de Hong Kong; Academia de Teatro de Xangai e Instituto de Investigacao Teatral Qiantang de Hangzhou do Interior da China; Local School de Singapura, Deaf Drama Company da Australia e Brain Fever Dance da Costa Rica. A Associacao tem tambem participado em co-producoes de teatro em Hong Kong desde 1986 e participa regularmente em co-producoes em Macau, com grande aclamacao do publico. A ARTHK recebe tambem muitos convites do estrangeiro, e apresentou-se em Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Xangai, Shenzhen, Taiwan, Singapura e Portugal.
Para alem da representacao, a Companhia de Representacao Teatral Hiu Kok dedica tempo e energia a popularizacao das artes teatrais de multiplas formas, oferecendo cursos de formacao para encenadores e actores/actrizes, workshops sobre a coordenacao geral de actividades de teatro e foruns. A Associacao envia tambem os seus actores a Portugal para participarem em cursos de teatro ministrados por grupos profissionais e financia estudos de teatro aos seus membros em Macau e no estrangeiro. Entre 1983 e 1985, participou na producao do programa “Dramas Hiu Kok” na Radio Macau, uma coleccao de 1200 episodios transmitidos ao longo de 3 anos. Publicou tambem a coleccao de pecas Rosto Rosa e Instante – Obras de Teatro Seleccionadas de Lawrence Lei. Lawrence Lei tornou-se Director Artistico Honorario Permanente da Associacao em Fevereiro de 2009.
Em 1998, a Associacao adquiriu uma unidade num edificio fabril e deu-lhe o nome de “Laboratorio Hiu Kok”. Este comecou a funcionar em Novembro de 1999, tornando-se o primeiro teatro de pequenas dimensoes a ser gerido por uma instituicao nao-governamental em Macau. Com uma area de cerca de 180m2, pode acomodar cerca de 80 pessoas, proporcionando as organizacoes artisticas de Macau instalacoes de ensaios e representacao unicas. As pecas realizadas neste pequeno teatro, para alem das obras criadas pela Associacao e muitos outros grupos de Macau, incluem producoes de companhias de teatro de Hong Kong, Costa Rica, Singapura, Taiwan, Japao, Coreia e Brasil. Ate 2009 foram levadas a cena quase 70 pecas no Laboratorio. Em 2007, tirando partido do seu espaco e flexibilidade, o Laboratorio introduziu o “Ciclo para Novos Encenadores” como objectivo de formar novos profissionais na area.
